YuXin Little Magic 3x3 V3 MagLev VT

This is the third generation of the budget Little Magic series. Earlier versions became popular as affordable, reliable 3x3 cubes. The YuXin Little Magic 3x3 V3 MagLev VT is a magnetic cube that uses a MagLev system instead of springs. Until now, this was mostly found in more expensive models. The VT version has a matte surface and comes in a stickerless bright colour scheme.

How it turns

According to sellers, the cube has good corner cutting straight out of the box and turns smoothly and evenly. YuXin also claims protection against popping and corner twists while keeping high speed. This is the manufacturer's claim, not the result of independent testing. With cubes like this, the feel depends largely on the setup and lube, so take a moment to set it up when you first get it.

MagLev and adjustment

• MagLev. Layer tension comes from magnets facing each other instead of metal springs. In practice, this means less friction, no "springy" sound and lighter turning.
• 6 levels of center travel adjustment. You can set the cube tighter for stability, or looser for speed and more flexible behaviour.
• Magnets in the pieces that help the layers snap into place during fast turning.

VT or UV?

The mechanism is the same in both versions. VT is YuXin's name for a matte finish that feels similar to velour. In practice, it works much like the frosted surface used by other manufacturers: it isn't shiny and offers moderate grip. The UV version has a glossy coating that grips your fingers more firmly. The choice mainly comes down to which surface you prefer in your hands.

Who is it for?

It's for anyone moving on from their first non-magnetic cube who wants a decent magnetic cube without paying for a flagship. It's also a good choice for parents looking for their child's first proper cube. An advanced speedcuber will more likely treat it as a cheap backup or a chance to try MagLev. The cube doesn't have features from top-end models, such as Ball-Core or magnet strength adjustment.
