Z-cube Grid Chain Cube is a 3x3 cube with a classic 3x3 mechanism. The only difference is how the faces look. Instead of solid colors, each face has a white base with a pattern of colorful chains and a grid that runs from one piece to the next. The pattern is printed directly on the plastic, so there are no stickers that could peel off or wear at the edges.

What makes it tricky

The algorithms are exactly the same as on a regular cube. The challenge lies in recognizing the pieces. Many of them look alike, and solving the cube also means restoring the continuity of the lines across the whole surface. The lines have to connect between neighboring pieces. Because of this, center orientation matters too, which you can't see at all on a standard 3x3. A cube that's only "more or less" solved gives itself away immediately with a broken pattern.

Your first solve will usually take longer than on a regular 3x3, because you'll spend more time observing than turning. With each attempt, it gets easier to remember what the individual parts of the chain look like.

Mechanism and solving

Inside is a simple, non-magnetic 3x3 construction in the standard 56 mm size. It's good enough for everyday solving. However, it lacks the features known from speed cubes, such as magnets, Ball-Core, MagLev or advanced tension adjustment. So the Grid Chain won't replace a cube for setting times. For speedcubing, you're better off with a magnetic 3x3 and treating the Grid Chain as an extra puzzle.

Who is it for?

For those who can already solve a 3x3 and want a new challenge without learning a different mechanism. Collectors of unusual 3x3 modifications will like it too. It also makes a great gift for anyone who enjoys cubes. The cube contains no electronic components or moving add-ons. For complete beginners, however, it can be frustrating, as it's easier to master your first cube with the classic color scheme.
