ZePuzzles Shattered Eye Cube

The cracked circles on the faces catch your eye right away, and that's where this puzzle gets its name. ZePuzzles Shattered Eye Cube is a small shape mod designed by Jacob Keener. Each face has a circular pattern divided into pieces. After a few moves the circles fall apart, and the whole fun is putting them back together. The cube is 56 mm, the same size as a typical 3x3.

How the Shattered Eye Cube works

The cube doesn't turn in layers like a classic 3x3. Instead, it turns around the corners, similar to a Dino Cube. The key difference is the rotating centers. A regular Dino Cube doesn't have them, so here you get one more element whose orientation you need to keep track of. The eye pattern itself is visually quite tricky. Mechanically, though, the puzzle is simple, which makes it a good first step beyond standard cubes.

If you already know the Dino Cube, solving this one shouldn't take you long. Setting the centers usually takes the most time. If you're looking for a hard puzzle to keep you busy for many evenings, this probably isn't the model for you.

Black or Stickerless Bright?

The mechanism is the same in both versions; only the look is different:

• Black: colored pieces on black plastic. This makes the circle pattern stand out more clearly from the rest of the cube.
• Stickerless Bright: a stickerless version in bright colors. There's nothing that could peel off or wear away over time.

Who is it for?

The Shattered Eye Cube is a great choice if you can already solve a 3x3 and want to try a puzzle that turns around the corners. It will also appeal to shape mod collectors who like unusual designs. It's also a good, affordable gift for a child who's into cubes. This is not a speedcube, so there's no point judging it by TPS or corner cutting.
