DianSheng Solar 3x3 M UV is a magnetic 3x3 cube from the budget Solar series. What sets it apart from the base model is a glossy UV coating that gives your fingers a better grip. There's no elaborate adjustment system or high-end extras. Instead, you get the two things a regular non-magnetic cube lacks most: clear layer positioning and better grip. The cube comes in a stickerless bright version.

How it turns

The magnets are fairly strong, and the turning is snappy. The layers clearly "snap" into place, which helps you align your moves, especially if you're just learning to solve faster. The pieces have a shape the manufacturer calls "tortoise shell", which is meant to make turning easier and spread the lube evenly. Users rate the cube as good for its price range, but some mention occasional lockups. Don't expect it to compete with a flagship model. The small size (approx. 55 mm) suits people with smaller hands and anyone trying one-handed solving (OH).

UV coating

The UV-coated plastic is glossy and has high grip. The cube slips less in sweaty hands and during faster turning, but it looks different from matte (frosted) models. Whether a UV or frosted surface is better comes down mainly to personal taste.

Solar 3x3 M UV compared with other Solar cubes

The DianSheng Solar series also includes cheaper non-magnetic cubes, such as the Solar 3E, and the more advanced Solar S3M 2022 with compression and tension adjustment (also available in a MagLev version). The Solar 3x3 M UV sits between them. It already has magnets but offers little room for setting up the mechanism. If you want to tune the feel of your cube to your preferences, the S3M is the better choice.

Who is it for?

It makes a good first magnetic cube for a beginner, a gift for a child who is learning to solve, or a cheap backup cube to keep in your bag. An advanced speedcuber looking for competition gear will more likely choose a model with adjustment options and a more refined mechanism.
