This puzzle from the FangShi LimCube series looks like a pineapple, but inside it runs on a 2x2x2 mechanism. FangShi 2x2x2 Pineapple cube is a shape mod, meaning a cube with a modified shape. It has the same number of pieces as the FangShi Discrete Pyraminx and uses the same 2x2 Ball-Core, which allows deep layer cuts. How is it different from a regular 2x2 cube?

The moves are the same as on a 2x2, but the unusual shape and deep cuts mean that after just a few turns the pineapple looks completely different from its solved state. If you already know a 2x2 method, you have a good starting point, but you will still need to get used to a different way of tracking the pieces. How it turns

This is a collector's cube, not a speed cube, and that is how you should treat it. Buyers point out that the layers are harder to grip than on a regular cube, and the moving coloured pieces turn very lightly and easily slip out of alignment. Some reviews also mention that the plastic is slippery and that the cube can be loose out of the box. You can tighten the tension with a screwdriver. The cube is not legal for WCA competitions.

A word of caution when solving: as with any 2x2 cube, do not pry or force the corners to twist, as you may break a piece. If the cube pops, the pieces can usually be put back in by hand.

Who is it for?

The Pineapple cube is a great fit for someone who has already mastered the classic 2x2 and 3x3 and wants to practise solving shape mods, as well as for collectors of shape-shifting puzzles. It nicely complements a collection of FangShi LimCube mods, for example alongside the Discrete Pyraminx. Thanks to its distinctive look, it is also a popular gift. For a child's first cube, however, a regular magnetic 2x2 or 3x3 cube is a better choice.
