GalaxyPuzzle Icosaminx

GalaxyPuzzle Icosaminx is a Megaminx in the shape of an icosahedron. The outer shape is changed, but inside it works with a regular Megaminx mechanism. An icosahedron has 12 vertices, exactly as many as the Megaminx has faces. That's why the layers here turn around the corners rather than around the face centers. Our Black version has black plastic and colored faces.

How it works

Each vertex of the icosahedron corresponds to one face of the Megaminx, so the moves are the same, you just see them differently. On the solved puzzle it's hard to tell where the cuts run. After a few moves, the Icosaminx loses its regular shape and starts to look completely different from how it began. This shape-shifting effect is the biggest attraction of this puzzle.

Do you need to know the Megaminx?

You don't have to, but it helps a lot. The mechanism is the same, so if you can solve a Megaminx, you already know the basic moves and the layer-by-layer approach. What's harder is finding your way around the puzzle itself. After the shape changes, the pieces are harder to recognize, and a scrambled Icosaminx looks less clear. If you're just starting out, it's better to begin with a regular Megaminx and move on to the Icosaminx afterwards.

For solving or for a collection?

The Icosaminx has no magnets and is not a puzzle for timed speedcubing. It's a puzzle for people who enjoy solving unusual puzzles at a relaxed pace, and for collectors. It fits especially well into a collection of Platonic solids, alongside the cube, Pyraminx, Megaminx and octahedron. It also makes a great gift for someone who already owns the classic cubes and is looking for the next challenge.
