GalaxyPuzzle Icosaminx Limited Edition

GalaxyPuzzle Icosaminx Limited Edition is a puzzle shaped like a regular icosahedron, a solid with 20 triangular faces. The layers turn around the vertices, not around the faces. The Icosaminx is based on the Megaminx and is a shape mod of it. For years, puzzles like this were available mainly as handmade 3D-printed models. GalaxyPuzzle has now released it in mass production. We offer two limited colour versions: Primary and Purple.

How the Icosaminx solves

An icosahedron has 12 vertices, the same number as the faces of a Megaminx. That is where the similarity between the two puzzles comes from: if you can solve a Megaminx, you will quickly spot familiar patterns here. Because of the different shape and colour layout, though, you have to learn to recognise the pieces all over again. Reviews say the Icosaminx looks more intimidating than it really is. With 20 faces there is plenty of room to move, so you can solve a large part of the puzzle intuitively by building blocks, and algorithms only come in handy at the very end.

This is a non-magnetic puzzle meant for collecting and solving for fun, not for speedsolving. It is not a WCA event, so there is no point judging it by TPS or setup the way you would a flagship 3x3.

Limited Edition versions

• Primary: a limited edition in Primary plastic colours.
• Purple: transparent purple plastic (ice purple) that lets you see the inside of the mechanism.

The two versions differ only in appearance. The shape and the way it turns are the same as in the standard Icosaminx.

Who is it for?

For people who collect unusual puzzles, especially Platonic solids: after the Pyraminx, the 3x3 cube, the FTO and the Megaminx, the Icosaminx completes the collection. It is a great pick if you already know the Megaminx and want to see how the same mechanism behaves in a completely different shape. We do not recommend it as your first puzzle. Beginners will find it easier to start with a 3x3 cube.
