GAN 16 Maglev UV 3x3

GAN 16 Maglev UV 3x3 is the base version of the flagship GAN 16 series. It has the same setup as the more expensive Max: MagLev instead of springs, core magnets, the numerical Magnetic GES system and a glossy UV coating. It has fewer magnets, though, which makes the cube lighter and quicker to respond. It weighs approx. 62 g, measures 56 mm and comes in the Stickerless Bright colour scheme.

How it turns

According to GAN, the standard version is meant to feel lighter, more responsive and more flexible than the Max. The Max, with its stronger magnet setup, feels more "solid" and stable. In practice, the standard GAN 16 Maglev suits light, fast turning and high TPS. MagLev uses repelling magnets in place of springs, which gives low resistance and quiet turning. The core magnets help the layers settle into place. The self-positioning angle given for this version is 35°, compared with 40° on the Max, so the cube pulls layers into place a little less on its own. If you prefer strong magnets and a more controllable cube, you may feel more at home on the Max, or you can set a higher tension on this one and use a thicker lube.

Adjustment and design

• Magnetic GES: a numerical adjustment system with 72 setting combinations. It lets you set the MagLev tension and centre travel to match your style.
• MagLev: springs replaced with repelling magnets.
• Core magnets: magnets between the corners and the core that help align the layers during fast solving.
• Contact surfaces: a honeycomb structure on the centres and triple tracks on the edges. They are designed to reduce friction and help spread the lube evenly.
• UV Coated: a glossy coating that gives a good grip.

GAN 16 Maglev UV or Max?

Both versions share the same 56 mm size, UV coating and Magnetic GES system. They differ in magnet setup. The Max has more magnets and is heavier (approx. 64 g), so it feels more stable and aligns layers more strongly on its own. The standard version is lighter and feels faster. It is also cheaper and keeps the full range of tension adjustment. There is also the Max-L, a 57 mm version of the Max for those who prefer a bigger cube.

Who is it for?

For speedcubers who want a flagship GAN on the GAN 16 platform and prefer a light, fast cube over a heavily magnetised one. It also makes sense if you are moving up from a cheaper magnetic cube and want to learn how different settings change the feel. For a child's first cube, a simpler magnetic model is usually enough.
