MoYu MeiLong 3x3x3 9 cm

This is a regular 3x3 cube, just much bigger. The MoYu MeiLong 3x3x3 9 cm has an edge length of 90 mm, while a standard speedcube measures around 55-57 mm. It comes from the MeiLong series, which MoYu releases under the MFJS (Cubing Classroom) brand. It's the same line as the budget 3x3 cubes often recommended as a first cube. The version available in our shop is stickerless in the bright colour scheme.

A big 3x3 cube: how does it turn?

Despite its size, the MeiLong 9 cm turns smoothly. Users point out that it compares well with other large cubes. Still, you have to keep physics in mind. The cube weighs about 232 g, roughly three times as much as a typical 3x3. The layers also have a longer distance to travel. That's why turning is slower and you make moves more with your whole hand than with your fingers alone. High TPS and the fingertricks you know from a 56 mm cube don't carry over one-to-one.

The cube has no magnets, so the layers don't settle into place on their own. If you're used to magnetic cubes, you may overshoot more often at first. Reviews also mention that straight out of the box the cube is quite noisy. In such cases, lubing it usually helps.

What is it good for?

• Learning and demonstrating algorithms. On a big cube you can clearly see what happens to each piece. This makes it easier to show a method to someone standing next to you, for example in a class or when teaching a child.
• Large hands. For some people, the standard size simply feels too small.
• Collecting and fun. It's a change from your everyday main, looks great on a shelf and gets guests curious.

Who is it for?

For people who teach others to solve, for cubers with a collection of unusual puzzles, and for anyone who wants a bigger version of the 3x3. For timed practice, it's better to choose a standard-size cube, ideally a magnetic one. The MeiLong 9 cm can help a child learn their first method. Just keep in mind that the cube is big and heavy for small hands.
