MoYu Super RS3M Maglev 3x3x3

For years, the RS3M series has been one of the most frequently recommended budget magnetic cubes. MoYu Super RS3M Maglev 3x3x3 is its refreshed 2022 version, the first generation of the Super RS3M. This variant uses a MagLev system instead of classic springs. The cube is 56 mm in size and comes in a stickerless bright colour scheme.

MagLev instead of springs

In the MagLev system, repelling magnets take over the job of the springs. There is less friction inside, there's no spring noise, and turning is lighter and faster than in the spring version. In total, the cube has 60 magnets, compared with 48 in the spring variant. The pieces have a shape the manufacturer calls "dragon scale", which is designed to help with smooth turning.

How it turns

Users describe the Super RS3M Maglev as a fast, snappy cube with magnets noticeably stronger than in the RS3M 2020. Straight out of the box it can feel dry and slightly sandy. Once you set the tension and add lube, it improves noticeably. Some people mention a slightly blocky feel. This version has no magnets in the core, so with aggressive turning it needs a bit more control than the Ball-Core variant. If you prefer a calmer, more controllable cube, you may need a moment to get used to it.

Tension adjustment

The cube has a dual-adjustment system with 9 settings. It lets you tune how the layers turn to suit your style: looser for speed or tighter for control. An adjustment tool is included, as is a spare adjustment piece.

Which Super RS3M version should you choose?

• Standard (springs): 48 magnets and a classic spring system.
• Maglev (this version): 60 magnets, MagLev instead of springs, lighter and faster turning.
• Maglev Ball-Core: 76 magnets, including magnets in the core that help the layers snap into place and stabilise the cube.

The Super RS3M V2 is a separate model, 55.5 mm in size, available with a UV coating, among other options.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants to try out MagLev without buying a flagship cube. It also works well as a first "real" speedcube after an ordinary supermarket cube. A parent buying for a child gets a magnetic cube with tension adjustment. Just keep in mind that it's quite fast, and for a complete beginner a simpler spring version may be enough.
