MoYu: speed cubes and speedcubing puzzles

The Chinese brand MoYu (魔域) has been making puzzle cubes and other twisty puzzles since 2013. It started out as a sub-brand of YongJun (YJ). Later the two went their separate ways, and today they operate independently. You'll find MoYu cubes at every price point, from affordable models for your first cube to flagship speed cubes that have been used to set world records.

What MoYu is known for

In 2013, MoYu cubes such as the WeiLong and AoLong took over from the DaYan models that dominated at the time. The brand is still strong at competitions today. Yusheng Du solved a 3x3 in 3.47 s on a WeiLong GTS2M, and Max Park set a 4x4 world record of 15.71 s on an AoSu WR M. MoYu also started making big cubes early on. Its first 6x6, the AoShi from 2014, already had good corner cutting and didn't pop during solves. The 13x13 was once the largest mass-produced cube, and the range now goes up to a 21x21.

Key MoYu cube series

  • WeiLong: flagship 3x3 cubes such as the WeiLong WRM V10, WeiLong V11, Super WeiLong and the older WeiLong GTS v2. Each generation comes in magnetic, MagLev (magnets instead of springs in the tension mechanism), Ball-Core (a magnetic core that attracts the pieces) and UV (glossy coating) versions. The versions differ mainly in feel and stability, so it's not a simple "more expensive means better" ladder.

  • RS: more affordable magnetic cubes, including the RS3M 2020, RS3M V5 (also in a UV Ball-Core version) and RS2M Evolution. Many people choose them as their first serious cube.

  • MeiLong: the budget series, with cubes from 2x2 to 5x5 (magnetic and non-magnetic), Pyraminx, Megaminx, Skewb, Square-1, Mirror and sets of several puzzles.

  • NxN cubes and older models: AoSu (4x4), AoChuang (5x5), AoShi (6x6), AoFu (7x7), as well as LingPo (MoYu's first 2x2) and YueXiao (3x3).

MoYu also makes accessories, including a timer and cube stands.

Who MoYu cubes are for

For a first cube, for example for a child, a MeiLong Magnetic or RS3M V5 is usually enough. They're inexpensive, and the magnets help keep the layers aligned, so they get in the way less while learning. If you already solve against the clock, take a look at the WeiLong cubes. They offer tension and compression adjustment, and the different magnet options let you choose a setup that leans more towards speed or control.
