Picube MGC SQ1 Edge Magnet

Picube MGC SQ1 Edge Magnet is Picube's modified version of the YJ MGC SQ-1, one of the most popular magnetic Square-1 puzzles. The key upgrade is extra magnets in the edges. Picube lubes the puzzle at the factory, so it turns smoothly straight out of the box.

What the edge magnets do

In the stock MGC, some of the magnets only work when the pieces are in certain positions, so the magnetic hold is uneven when the puzzle is out of cube shape. The edge magnets make the magnetic force more consistent during cubeshape and when turning the U and D layers. The puzzle shifts out of place less during fast turning, and the edges don't sink in when you press harder with your fingers. As a result, it's easier to keep up a higher pace without worrying about misalignments.

This version has no extra equator magnets or MagLev, so the slice (the / move) feels the same as on the standard MGC. If you want a more distinct, tighter slice, consider the higher versions.

Picube MGC SQ-1 versions: how they differ

• Magnetic: the classic MGC with Picube's setup, no extra magnets.
• Edge Magnet (this version): extra magnets in the edges. The puzzle is more stable and more predictable on the U/D layers.
• Edge + Equator Magnet: adds extra magnets in the middle layer, which improve the tactility and stability of the slice.
• Edge + Equator + MagLev: on top of that, MagLev instead of springs. This is the most advanced and most expensive option.

Edge Magnet sits in the middle of the range. It gives you noticeably more stability than the regular MGC without paying extra for the full set of modifications.

Who is it for?

For cubers who solve Square-1 regularly, already know the regular MGC and now want a puzzle that is more stable on the U/D layers. It's also a good choice if you're just starting out with Square-1 and want a puzzle that doesn't fall out of alignment in your hands while you learn cubeshape. That said, the standard MGC is enough if you just want to get to know this puzzle.
