Picube MGC SQ1 Edge Magnet + Equator Magnet + MagLev

Among the non-UV variants, this version of the Square-1 Picube MGC SQ1 has the most factory modifications. It is based on the YJ MGC Square-1, and Picube adds magnets in the edges, extra magnets in the middle layer (equator) and MagLev in place of the spring on the main axis. The plastic has a matte finish. The puzzle is stickerless and comes in two colour variants: Yellow and Black (with a black face).

What each modification does

  • Edge Magnet. In the standard MGC, only the corners have magnets. Here the edges have them too, so the U and D layers align better, even when the puzzle is not in cube shape.
  • Equator Magnet. Extra magnets in the middle layer help line the puzzle up before a slice, making it easier to hit the right position.
  • MagLev. Magnets replace the spring on the main axis. This makes top and bottom layer turns lighter, and there is no spring noise. Tension is adjusted with a screw, and a screwdriver is included.

How it solves

Users describe this version as fast and precise. Some find that U/D and middle-layer turns feel better than on a regular MGC with MagLev. The slice itself is not always as smooth, though. Out of the box the puzzle can be quite rattly, so it is worth lubing it right away. The magnets are not very strong, and lockups may occur with some turning styles. Adjusting the tension with the screw usually helps.

Which Picube MGC SQ1 version?

Picube sells the MGC SQ1 in several configurations: standard (magnets as in the original), Edge Magnet, Edge + Equator Magnet and this MagLev version. Each one is also available in a UV variant. If you want layers that snap into place more firmly but prefer the classic spring, choose the version without MagLev. The UV version has the same mechanism and differs only in its glossy coating, which gives more grip.

Who is it for?

For anyone who practises Square-1 regularly and wants a ready-made, heavily modified MGC without installing MagLev or extra magnets themselves. If you are just starting out with Square-1, the basic MGC is more than enough for learning algorithms.
