QiYi Hanoi Tower 10 layers

QiYi Hanoi Tower 10 layers is a Tower of Hanoi from QiYi with ten colorful discs. It's a classic logic puzzle invented in 1883 by the French mathematician Édouard Lucas. At the start, the whole tower stands on one of the outer pegs, from the largest disc at the bottom to the smallest at the top. Your goal is to move the entire tower to the peg on the opposite side.

Rules

  • You move only one disc at a time.
  • You always take the disc from the top of a stack and place it on another peg.
  • A larger disc may never be placed on a smaller one.

The middle peg serves as a helper. Without it, you couldn't follow the third rule.

How many moves does it take with 10 discs?

With ten discs, the shortest solution takes 1023 moves. Each extra disc roughly doubles the number of moves. So the 10-layer version isn't a five-minute puzzle. It's an exercise in patience, focus and consistency. A mistake halfway through can undo a good part of your work.

Once you understand the method, you can solve a tower of any height. To move the whole stack, you first set aside all the discs except the largest one, then move the largest disc to the target peg, and finally place the rest on top of it. In practice, this means repeating the same pattern on smaller and smaller parts of the tower. That's why the Tower of Hanoi often appears in math and computer science classes as an example of recursion.

Who is it for?

This version is for those who already know the rules and want a longer challenge. It also works well as an aid for learning algorithmic thinking. Children who are just getting to know the puzzle will find it easier to start with fewer discs. QiYi also makes this tower in 6-layer and 8-layer versions. You can still practice smaller towers on the 10-layer version, though: just start with a few of the top discs and add more as you go.
