QiYi Hanoi Tower 8 Layers is a classic logic puzzle: the Tower of Hanoi with eight colorful segments. At the start, the whole tower stands on one of three pegs, with the largest segment at the bottom and each one above it smaller. Your task is to move the tower to the peg on the opposite side. There is only one rule to keep in mind: a larger segment can never sit on a smaller one.

• You move one segment per move.
• You can only take the segment at the very top of a stack.
• You place a segment on an empty peg or on a segment larger than it.

How many moves do 8 layers take?

With eight segments, the shortest solution takes 255 moves. That calls for real focus, because one wrong move in the middle can easily make the whole solution longer. The puzzle is based on recursion. To move the largest segment, you first have to put the seven smaller ones on the middle peg (127 moves). Then you move the largest segment and stack those seven back on top of it (another 127 moves). Once you understand this pattern, you stop solving blindly and start planning your moves. The smallest segment always moves every other turn, and always in the same direction. This tip helps a lot at the beginning.

QiYi also makes versions with 6 segments (63 moves) and 10 segments (1023 moves). The 8-layer version gives you plenty to think about, but you can still solve it in one session.
