QiYi Hanoi Tower 6 Layers

QiYi Hanoi Tower 6 Layers is a six-piece version of the Tower of Hanoi, one of the oldest logic puzzles, made by a manufacturer known for its speedcubing cubes. At the start, all pieces sit on one peg, from the largest at the bottom to the smallest at the top. Your task is to move the whole tower to the peg on the opposite side, and your only help is the third peg in the middle.

Rules

• You move only one piece at a time.
• You always take the top piece from a chosen stack and place it on another stack or on an empty peg.
• You may never place a larger piece on a smaller one.

How many moves does it take?

With six pieces, the minimum is 63 moves. In general, it takes 2ⁿ - 1 moves, where n is the number of pieces, so each extra piece doubles the length of the solution. The 6-layer version offers a reasonable level of difficulty: you can solve it by feel, but matching the minimum requires understanding the pattern. Once you get it, you can start solving against the clock and counting your moves.

Who is it for?

The tower works well for a child who is just learning to plan a few moves ahead, and also for a cuber who wants something different from a cube. You can explain the rules in a minute, and there are no algorithms or notation to learn. The Tower of Hanoi often appears in maths and computer science lessons as an example of recursion, so it is also great for learning.
