QiYi Magnetic Void 3x3x3

A 3x3 cube without centers. Each face has an empty space in the middle, and a hole runs straight through the whole cube. QiYi Magnetic Void 3x3x3 is a magnetic version of this classic puzzle, built by QiYi on a speedcube-style mechanism. Outside Poland, the same model is also sold as the QiYi Speed Void Cube and the Racing Void Cube.

How it differs from a regular 3x3

The cube has no centers to show the color of each face, so you have to read the colors from the corners and edges. The moves are the same as on a regular 3x3, so the algorithms you know still work. However, there is a parity that a standard cube doesn't have: at the end you may be left with swapped edges. You usually fix it with a single turn of the middle layer and then carry on solving. If you can already solve a 3x3, it's an interesting change and a good test of whether you really understand what you're doing.

Magnets and mechanism

• 48 magnets in the edges and corners. They help the layers settle into place and give a noticeable "click" with every turn.
• Adjustable core with screws and springs. You can set the tension to suit your turning style.
• Matte (frosted) surface without UV coating. QiYi also offers a separate Magnetic UV version with a glossy finish.

Users describe the cube as light and smooth to turn. Without centers, however, corner cutting is clearly more limited than on a modern 3x3 speedcube. Some compare it to a classic Rubik's Cube. This isn't a cube for breaking records, but it works well for relaxed solving.

Who is it for?

For anyone who can already solve a regular 3x3 cube and wants to try something new without learning a completely different puzzle. It's also a nice addition to a collection, as the hollow center really stands out on a shelf. The magnetic version turns more confidently than a cheap void cube without magnets. For your very first cube, a standard 3x3 is a better choice, because the lack of centers makes learning the beginner's method harder.
