QiYi Thunderclap 4x4x4 60 mm

The Thunderclap series started with a 3x3 back in 2015. It was fast, had a distinct clicky feel and cost less than the flagship cubes of the time. QiYi Thunderclap 4x4x4 60 mm is a smaller version of the 4x4 from this series, sold in some shops as the Thunderclap Mini 4x4. It is a non-magnetic 4x4 speed cube with screw-based tension adjustment. We have it in Black, White and Stickerless Bright.

How the QiYi Thunderclap 4x4 60 mm turns

The 4x4 was developed from the Thunderclap 3x3. Its internal design is very similar, and while solving you can feel that both models come from the same family. The cube has no factory magnets, so the layers don't snap into place on their own. Turning accuracy depends on your hand and on the tension setting. With the screws tightened, the cube is more stable and easier to control. With them loosened, it turns more lightly and handles corner cutting better, but if it's set too loose, the risk of popping increases.

60 mm or 62 mm?

The Thunderclap 4x4 comes in two sizes: the standard 62 mm and the smaller 60 mm. A 2 mm difference may seem small, but a 4x4 is bigger and heavier than a 3x3, so you notice it in your hands straight away. The 60 mm version fits more easily in the hand and should suit people with slightly smaller hands, including children.

Magnetizing and who this cube is for

The design is very well suited to DIY magnetizing. After this modification, the Thunderclap can compete with noticeably more expensive 4x4 cubes. Keep in mind, though, that this is an older model. Today there are affordable 4x4 cubes with magnets straight out of the box, so if you don't plan to modify it, a magnetic cube may be more convenient. The Thunderclap 60 mm works well as an affordable first 4x4 for learning to solve the centers and pair the edges. It will also appeal to people who like to set up a cube to suit themselves. The model is legal for official competitions.
