Pioneer UV is the top version of the refreshed XMD Tornado V3 Premium series from X-Man Design. It has everything the Flagship UV has, namely a magnetic Ball-Core and a UV coating, and adds MagLev instead of springs. It is the fastest variant in the Premium line, and it takes the least effort to start a turn. This 3x3 cube is built on the Tornado V3 platform, on which Max Park set a 3.13 s world record (single). In the Premium version, the manufacturer reinforced the core and expanded the adjustment options, and the feel is slightly more "airy" than in the original V3.

MagLev and Ball-Core in practice

In MagLev, the springs are replaced by repelling magnetic rings, a large one and a small one, set one inside the other. A layer starts moving right away, without the noticeable "threshold" of a spring, and there is less friction. Ball-Core means magnets in a spherical core that pull the corners towards the centre. At high TPS, the layers settle into place more easily on their own.

The Pioneer feels faster and looser than the Flagship UV, which has the same Ball-Core but keeps the springs and gives you more control. The Standard version has no magnets in the core and uses matte plastic. Some cubers found even the original V3 Pioneer too fast, so if you have a controlled turning style, expect to spend some time fine-tuning the setup.

Adjustment and durability

You set the axis distance and elasticity by hand, without tools, using the numbers on the rings. This gives you 64 base combinations, and a higher number means a firmer setting. With the edge magnet strength, you can change the feel from light and fast to a more distinct click. The reinforced core and the magnets embedded in the corner feet are designed to keep the magnets from falling out during aggressive turning. Some users of the first V3 complained about magnets falling out.

Performance and who it is for

According to the specifications, corner cutting reaches approx. 34°, and reverse corner cutting has been improved, so imprecise turns lead to catching less often. The cube turns quietly and smoothly. The glossy UV coating gives a secure grip and is resistant to wear. It grips best in dry hands.

This version is for speedcubers who want the fastest Tornado V3 Premium and like light turning. If you prefer a more controlled, spring-based feel, choose the Flagship UV.
