Zcube has released a newer series of Z-LUBE lubes in three versions. Each one has a different purpose, which is stated right on the label: Alpha is Speed, Beta is Smooth and Gamma is Maintenance. So Z-LUBE Beta (Smooth) isn't meant to make your cube as fast as possible. Its job is to improve the turning itself, meaning smoothness and even layer movement. The lube comes in a 10 ml bottle.

When to use the Smooth lube

It's most useful for a cube that feels dry, scratchy or uneven straight out of the box. It also helps a cube that has lost its smoothness after a lot of solving and has become scratchy. In these situations you usually don't need more speed, just a smoother feeling. The cube should turn evenly, without plastic rubbing against plastic. How much speed and control you gain after lubing depends on the cube itself, its setup and the amount of lube. The same lube can give different results in two different models.

Alpha, Beta or Gamma?

• Alpha (Speed): the version focused on speed.
• Beta (Smooth): the version focused on smoother, silkier turning.
• Gamma (Maintenance): the version for regular cube maintenance.

If your cube is already fast enough but you don't like how it turns, it's better to start with Beta than with Alpha.

How to use

It's best to start with a small amount, for example one or two drops. Then do a few dozen turns on all layers so the lube spreads out. Only then should you judge the effect and add a little more if needed. Too much lube usually slows the cube down and can make it feel "gummy". It's easier to add more lube than to remove the excess afterwards.
