DianSheng Mirror Skewb

DianSheng Mirror Skewb is a Skewb turned into a Mirror Cube-style shape mod. The mechanism and moves are the same as on a regular Skewb. The difference is that the faces have no colors. The cut lines are shifted, so every piece has a different shape and size, and once scrambled the puzzle turns into a solid with irregular edges. You solve it by looking at the shape of the pieces, not the colors. The puzzle measures 56 mm and comes in four colors: blue, pink, yellow and purple.

How it differs from a regular Skewb

On a classic Skewb, the centers can be rotated without any visible effect. On the Mirror version, the centers have an irregular shape, so you can see how they are rotated, and you have to solve them in the correct orientation. This makes the puzzle a bit like a Super Skewb. The corners are also recognized by shape alone, so at first you need to look at the puzzle more carefully than with a colored Skewb. Skewb solving methods still work; you just need to add a few steps to orient the centers.

Turning

It is a light, compact puzzle (59 g), designed for fun and collecting rather than breaking records. Mirror Skewb is not a WCA event, so there is no point comparing it with flagship speedcubing Skewbs. This version has no magnets, so the layers do not snap into place on their own and turning is less precise than on a magnetic Skewb. When solving at a relaxed pace, this matters less than when turning fast.

Who is it for?

A good choice if you can already solve a Skewb and want a new challenge on the same mechanism. It will also appeal to shape mod collectors and to anyone who already owns a 3x3 Mirror Cube and is looking for something with a different kind of turning. For your very first Skewb, it is better to choose the classic colored version. It makes it easier to understand how this puzzle works.
