DianSheng Mirror Skewb Magnetic

DianSheng Mirror Skewb Magnetic is a mirror version of the classic Skewb where you tell the pieces apart by shape instead of colour. The whole puzzle is a single colour, and the pieces differ in size. Once scrambled, it loses its cube shape and turns into a solid with irregular edges. Solving it means restoring its even shape. This version is magnetic and measures approx. 56 mm.

How a mirror Skewb works

The mechanism and the way it turns are the same as in a regular Skewb. The puzzle turns around axes running through the corners, and each move involves half of the puzzle. The only difference is how you identify the pieces. There are no colours, so you have to look at the shape and size of the corners and centers. Even if you already know a Skewb method, recognizing the pieces and their orientation takes more time at first. The algorithms stay the same, and recognition is the main challenge.

Magnets

The Magnetic version has magnets that pull the layer into the correct position with every turn. Moves have a clear "click" and the puzzle doesn't stop halfway, which matters in a shape mod, because with an irregular shape it's harder to judge by eye whether a layer is properly aligned. The manufacturer doesn't specify the number or strength of the magnets, and there is no adjustment. The non-magnetic version turns more loosely and less precisely.

Who is it for?

For people who already solve the Skewb and want to try something new without learning a different mechanism. It also works well as another puzzle in a shape mod collection, alongside the mirror 3x3 or DianSheng's larger mirror puzzles. If this is your first Skewb, you may want to start with a coloured version and move on to the mirror later. The single colour and unusual scrambled shape also make it look great on a shelf.
