GAN 12 Leap 3x3

GAN 12 Leap 3x3 is the version of GAN's 2021 flagship cube that runs on classic springs. The other version, GAN 12 MagLev, uses repelling magnets instead of springs. The Leap weighs 61 g, measures 56 mm and has a matte frosted surface. It uses the GES PRO+ adjustment system, and its core contains magnets from the Enhanced Core Positioning 2.0 design.

How the GAN 12 Leap turns

You can feel right away that the cube is light. It turns fast and effortlessly, and corner cutting is very good. The magnets in the pieces and in the core are strong. According to GAN, a layer snaps into place on its own from about 30° away from the correct position. This keeps the cube stable during fast turning, but the moves have a distinct "click". The feel is similar to the 11 series, and the cube behaves more confidently during solves. Reviews and user feedback point out a few things. Out of the box, the cube is fairly dry and loud. The frosted plastic can feel slippery at first, but it smooths out over time. If you like heavier cubes, the Leap may feel too light and "airy" to you. Some people also reported popping on the factory settings, so it's a good idea to spend a moment on setup right away.

GES PRO+ and adjustment

• GES PRO+ is a newer version of the GES v5 system. Tension and compression are set in a similar way to GAN MagLev cubes, but here traditional springs do the work.
• Magnet adjustment: you change the magnet strength by swapping the magnet bars. Two sets are included: triangular (installed at the factory) and hexagonal.
• Core magnets (Enhanced Core Positioning 2.0) help align the layers and stabilize the cube. This is not a Ball-Core.
• According to the manufacturer, the GAN 12 series allows a total of 252 setting combinations (tension, compression, magnet strength).

Leap or MagLev?

The Leap has classic springs, so you feel their familiar action as you turn. It is also 5 g lighter than the MagLev version. The MagLev runs on magnets, is faster and has a more "airy" feel. The Leap is a better fit for people who prefer the traditional feel of springs.

Who is it for?

The Leap is for speedcubers who want a fast, light flagship cube with strong magnets and extensive setup options. The cube is allowed in official WCA competitions. For complete beginners it's probably too much, as you only appreciate the full potential of this cube when solving fast.
