GAN 12 MagLev UV 3x3

The GAN 12 MagLev came out in 2021 and was the first mass-produced cube in which the springs were replaced with repelling ring magnets (MagLev). The GAN 12 MagLev UV 3x3 is the version coated with a thin layer of UV-cured varnish. This gives it a glossy surface with slightly better grip, and the coating is also meant to protect the plastic from wear. The cube is 56 mm, weighs 66 g and is legal for official competitions.

How it turns

With no springs in the mechanism, fewer parts rub against each other, so turning is very light and you can barely feel any resistance. Reviewers describe the feel as crispy and point out that the cube is quiet. Straight out of the box it can be dry and slightly scratchy, which is why most people lube it right away.

Stability comes from Enhanced Core Positioning 2.0. Elongated magnets in the corners are attracted to the magnets in the core and snap the layer into place when it is about 30° short of a full turn. The cube finishes the move for you, so it forgives less precise turns, and corner cutting is good.

However, MagLev gives the cube a very loose and fast character. If you like tight, controllable cubes, you will need some time to get used to it or a tighter setup. Some users also report occasional lockups and catching. Even so, it is worth trying at least once, because the feel is clearly different from spring-based cubes.

Adjustment: Magnetic GES

The 11 series introduced magnets between the core and the corners. The GAN 12 keeps them and adds Magnetic GES, i.e. nuts with magnets in place of springs. You adjust two things:

1. tension: 6 levels of magnet repulsion force, i.e. how firmly the layers are pressed against the core,
2. center travel: 6 levels of how far the center can move. This affects corner cutting and resistance to popping.

Together this gives 36 combinations. The magnet strength can be changed in 6 settings (GMS v3 system). You can adjust everything with the tool included in the set.

UV, Frosted or M Leap?

The MagLev Frosted version has the same mechanism, but a matte surface without the coating. The GAN 12 M Leap uses classic springs (GES Pro+) and weighs 61 g. It is the option for those who prefer a more traditional feel.

Who is it for?

Mainly for cubers who already solve confidently and want a flagship, very fast cube with plenty of adjustment options. Beginners will manage it too, because the magnets help snap the layers into place. However, the full range of settings will be appreciated mostly by more experienced solvers.
