GAN 12 MagLev Black 3x3

Released in 2021, the GAN 12 was the first mass-produced cube with the MagLev system. Instead of springs, it uses pairs of repelling magnets to hold the layer tension. GAN 12 MagLev Black is the stickered version on black plastic with a black interior. It's a nod to cubers who started out on classic stickered cubes. The mechanism is the same as in the stickerless versions.

How it turns

With no springs, there is less friction between the pieces, so turning is very light and smooth. The cube also doesn't make the typical spring noise. Many users describe it as very fast, and at first even a bit too fast: straight out of the box and without any setup, overshooting is easy. Some people also report occasional catching. A lighter turning style, a few dozen solves to break it in and the right settings all help. Some reviewers rate its corner cutting and stability as weaker than the GAN 11 M Pro's. If you prefer firmer, more controllable cubes, keep this in mind.

Magnetic GES and tension adjustment

• Magnetic GES are GES nuts with magnets instead of springs. They offer 6 elasticity levels (the repelling force of the magnets) and 6 center travel settings, i.e. the distance of the centers from the core.
• Enhanced Core Positioning 2.0 places magnets between the corners and the core, building on the solution from the 11 series. They help with auto-alignment and stabilize the layers.
• Magnet strength adjustment: the manufacturer specifies 7 levels. The set includes two sets of magnetic feet: triangular (factory-installed) and hexagonal.
• The manufacturer specifies a total of 252 setting combinations. Adjustments are made with the multi-function tool included in the set.

Who is it for?

For a cuber who already has experience with magnetic cubes and wants to try MagLev, while preferring the classic stickered look. It's a cube for someone who likes fast, light turning and isn't afraid of tweaking the settings. For a child's first cube, a simpler, calmer magnetic model is a better choice.
