GAN i4 Maglev UV

GAN i4 Maglev UV is a 3x3 smart cube from the i series and the successor to the GAN356 i3. Its mechanism comes from the GAN16, and instead of a regular core it has a smart Ball-Core with sensors inside. The cube connects via Bluetooth to the CubeStation app and sends every move to it in real time. This version features MagLev, a glossy UV coating and the stickerless bright colour scheme.

How it turns

Unlike many cheaper smart cubes, the i4 turns like a regular, good speedcubing cube. Users describe it as fast, smooth and stable, and some compare it to the GAN16 or the MoYu WeiLong V11. The magnets are fairly strong and self-aligning works within 35°, so the layers snap into place noticeably. There are also occasional reports of catching on M moves and some layer transitions, so it is not completely free of lockups.

Mechanism and adjustment

• MagLev: the springs have been replaced with repelling magnets. According to GAN, the cube contains 76 magnets in total, and the manufacturer calls this solution double MagLev. In practice, turning is lighter and there is less friction than with a classic spring system.
• Magnetic GES: 6 levels of center travel and 12 tension levels give you 72 setting combinations, so you can set up the cube more for speed or more for control.
• Ball-Core in 6 colours: the colour markings make it easier to reassemble the cube correctly after taking it apart, so the cube's state matches the app once it is put back together.
• UV Coated: the glossy coating gives a stronger grip than matte plastic.

• Zero-Loss Hall-Effect Magnetic Sensing: layer moves are registered by Hall sensors.
• Gyroscope: the app shows the rotation of the whole cube in 360° in real time.
• Two battery modes: up to 30 hours in Performance mode or up to 200 hours in Endurance (power-saving) mode.
• Fast charging: 10 minutes in the PowerPod is enough for about 10 hours of use.

Who is it for?

GAN aims the i4 at intermediate cubers. The cube is a great fit if you want to train with an app: track your solves, learn algorithms and play online, without switching to a weaker mechanism. It also helps you learn clean turning from the start. It is not the top smart model in the GAN range – that spot belongs to the GAN16 ui Maglev MAX. If you prefer a matte finish, you can choose the i4 Maglev Frosted, and for fans of springs there is the i4 Leap Frosted.
