GAN Pyraminx M Standard: a magnetic pyraminx with magnets in the core

GAN's first-ever pyraminx, released in 2020. It was also the first mass-produced puzzle in which the magnets attract the pieces to the core, not just to each other. GAN Pyraminx M Standard is the basic version of this model. It has core-edge magnets and the GES system, but it doesn't include the extra nut sets or the magnets in the pieces that you'll find in the more expensive variants. This unit is the Stickerless Bright version with frosted plastic.

How it turns

The puzzle turns very smoothly and freely. The feel is smooth, partly thanks to the honeycomb texture on the pieces. Corner cutting is very good because the pieces have large florians. GAN states that the puzzle corner-cuts up to 120°. The core magnets don't give a strong "click" when a layer lines up. Instead, the layer settles into place fairly smoothly, and overshooting is rare. The Standard version has fewer magnets than the Enhanced. This makes it lighter, and every move takes less effort. However, some users find it slightly less stable as a result. The frosted plastic offers less grip, which not everyone likes. The tips may need a firmer push, as they can fail to turn if the move is too gentle.

Magnets and GES

Magnets are mounted in the core, in the edge feet and in the tips. Tension is adjusted with 4th-generation GES nuts. The Standard version comes with only one set of GES v4 nuts, green (2.5N), factory-installed.

Standard, Explorer or Enhanced?

All three versions share the same mechanism and core-edge magnets. The Explorer adds 3 extra GES sets to swap in. The Enhanced also has magnets in the edges and centers, which gives more noticeable layer alignment and slightly more weight. If you don't plan to change the tension and you like a lighter puzzle, the Standard gives you the same basic character for less.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants their first proper magnetic pyraminx, and for speedcubers looking for a light puzzle with very good corner cutting. The model is legal for official competitions. If you want to experiment with tension, consider the Explorer version.
