HuaMeng YS3M Magnetic 3x3

HuaMeng YS3M Magnetic 3x3

HuaMeng YS3M Magnetic 3x3 is the base version of the YS3M, a cube from MoYu's HuaMeng line. The model is endorsed by Yusheng Du, who held the 3x3 single world record at the time of its release. The Magnetic version has piece-to-piece magnets only, with no magnets in the core. It runs on standard springs, and both tension and compression are adjustable. This gives you the YS3M mechanism without paying extra for MagLev or Ball-Core.

How it turns

Users usually praise the YS3M for its corner cutting. The cube turns smoothly even when the layers are not perfectly aligned. The pieces have a dragon scale texture that reduces the contact surface and keeps layers from sticking. The feel is most often described as fairly tactile. Straight out of the box, however, the cube can be dry and a bit sandy. It performs best after lubing and a few days of breaking in. It responds well to different lubes and doesn't need an advanced setup. Many people rate it highly with just basic lubing.

How it differs from other YS3M versions

• Magnetic (this version): piece-to-piece magnets and springs. It is the lightest, about 76 g.
• MagLev: uses repelling magnets instead of springs. There is no spring noise, and the cube is slightly heavier.
• Ball-Core: adds a magnetic core that helps the layers snap into place and stabilizes the cube during fast turning.
• Ball-Core UV: has the same mechanism as the Ball-Core, plus a glossy UV coating with stronger grip.

All versions share the same core mechanism. The more expensive ones add features that change the feel, but not every cuber needs them.

Who is it for?

The Magnetic version works well as a first proper speedcube. It also makes a good second practice cube for someone who already owns a flagship, or for a child who has outgrown a non-magnetic cube. If you like noticeably stronger layer guidance from a magnetic core, consider the Ball-Core version.
