MoYu brings back the Aolong name with a completely new mechanism. MoYu Aolong V5 3x3 8M Ball Core Maglev UV is the middle of the four magnetic 3x3 cube variants in this series. It has 88 magnets, including 8 in the spherical core (Ball-Core), a MagLev system instead of classic springs, and a glossy UV coating. It comes in a stickerless bright colour scheme.

How it turns

Users describe the MagLev Aolong V5 as a clearly fast cube. According to reviews, it stays fast even at the tightest settings, and the turns feel springy and well defined. The plastic is fairly hard, and the feel is more "blocky" than the WeiLong V11. Some people note that the cube may feel loose straight out of the box and that the UV coating can be slightly sticky at first. Adjusting the settings and some solving usually help. If you prefer a calm, controllable feel, be prepared to spend some time setting this cube up to suit you.

Technology and adjustment

• 8-magnet Ball-Core. The magnets in the core attract the corners, so the layers snap into place more reliably. This works together with the magnets in the pieces themselves.
• MagLev. Repelling magnets do the work instead of springs. This gives faster, smoother turning than spring versions.
• Carbon fibre core. The six-arm core is light and rigid.
• Dual repulsion positioning. Magnets in the feet of the edges and corners work with the core and help align the layers.
• Corner twist protection. The shape of the pieces makes accidental corner twists less likely.
• 8 tension levels and 8 compression (distance) levels, giving 64 setting combinations in total.

Which Aolong V5 variant should you choose?

The basic Aolong V5 Magnetic has 48 magnets, springs and a matte surface. The Magnetic UV version differs from it only in the coating. The 8M version described here adds MagLev and Ball-Core, while the 20M has 20 magnets in the core (100 in total), so the layers align even more strongly. The 8M version is a sensible middle ground if you want MagLev and Ball-Core but don't need the strongest variant. There is also the Aolong V5 AI with Bluetooth connectivity. It is a different product and is not allowed in competitions.

Who is it for?

For speedcubers who like fast cubes with clear layer guidance and want to set up the cube themselves. For a child's first cube, the basic magnetic version is a better choice.
