MoYu Aolong V5 3x3 M UV

After many years, MoYu is bringing back the Aolong name. The fifth generation is a new design, not a refreshed old model. The MoYu Aolong V5 3x3 M UV is the magnetic version with classic springs and a glossy UV coating. It has the same mechanism as the standard Aolong V5 M and differs only in the finish. The cube comes in the stickerless bright colour scheme.

Mechanism and adjustment

• 48 magnets in a dual repulsion positioning system. The magnets in the feet of the corners and edges repel from the core, so the layers quickly snap back into place after each move.
• Carbon fibre core. It is light and rigid, so it doesn't flex during fast turning, and your settings hold for a long time.
• Two independent adjustment ranges: 8 spring tension levels and 8 levels of layer distance from the core, for 64 combinations in total. Tension affects how springy the turning feels. Distance from the core changes corner cutting and stability.
• Design that limits corner twisting, i.e. corner twists during aggressive turning.

How it turns

This version has no MagLev and no Ball-Core. As a result, the turning is more classic and predictable than in the top variants of the series. Reviews of the V5 line describe it as fairly fast right out of the box, with a harder plastic. Once you set the tension and core distance, you can easily tune it more towards speed or more towards control. Keep in mind, though, that these comments apply to the whole series, and each individual cube may feel slightly different after lubing and setup.

Which Aolong V5 version?

The M and M UV versions share the same spring mechanism and 48 magnets. The M version is matte (frosted) and offers medium grip. The UV version has a glossy coating that grips your fingers better and is more scratch-resistant. The more expensive variants use MagLev instead of springs and a Ball-Core with 8 or 20 magnets, giving 88 or 100 magnets in total. This makes them lighter to turn and they close the layers more strongly on their own. If you prefer classic springs and don't need magnets in the core, there's no need to pay extra for the top version.

Who is it for?

For anyone who can already solve with a beginner method and wants to move up to a proper speedcube with a wide range of adjustment. It will also appeal to those who prefer a glossy UV surface over matte plastic. With so many settings, it's also a great choice if you want to learn how to set up a cube yourself.
