MoYu Weilong WRM V9 Ball-Core UV

This is MoYu's 2023 flagship 3x3 cube in the best-equipped version of the first V9 series. The MoYu WeiLong WRM V9 Ball-Core UV uses MagLev instead of springs and has a magnetic core (Ball-Core) and a glossy UV coating. Inside there are 88 magnets, including 8 in the core ball. The cube has a standard size of 55 mm and is available in a stickerless bright colour scheme.

Ball-Core and MagLev in the WeiLong WRM V9

Ball-Core is a ball with magnets placed in the centre of the cube. It attracts the corners and works together with the magnets in the pieces, so after a move the layers snap into place more firmly on their own. The edges have extra magnets that repel the core, so the cube aligns a layer even when it is further off. MagLev replaces the springs with a pair of repelling magnets. There is no spring friction or spring noise, and turning feels lighter. Corners held by the core are harder to twist, so this version handles aggressive solving well.

How it turns

Straight out of the box the cube is very fast. According to reviewers, you only get full control after a setup, meaning lubing and choosing your settings. After that, turning is smooth and stable, and corner cutting is rated very highly. The magnetic core gives a more solid and predictable feel than the MagLev version without Ball-Core, which some people find fairly flexible and harder to control. The pieces have a "dragon scale" texture that reduces friction between them.

Adjustment and UV coating

The dual adjustment system has 9 levels and lets you set tension (tensioning) and magnetic compression separately. The compression ring has no markings. The easiest way is to turn it back to the first level and count the clicks. The UV coating is glossy, gives better grip than matte plastic and makes the colours more vivid.

Which V9 version should you choose?

The V9 Standard has classic springs and 48 magnets, while the V9 MagLev has 60 magnets. Both have a matte (frosted) finish and are lighter. The Ball-Core UV version adds 8 magnets in the core and a UV coating. There is also a 20-Magnet Ball-Core variant with 20 magnets in the core (100 in total), which has even stronger auto-alignment.

This version makes the most sense for a speedcuber who wants a fast cube with noticeable auto-alignment and doesn't mind spending a moment on setup. For a child's first cube, the V9 Standard or MagLev is more than enough.
