MoYu Weilong WRM V9 Maglev

This is the ninth generation of the WeiLong WRM, MoYu's flagship 3x3 cube from 2023, in the version with the MagLev system. The MoYu WeiLong WRM V9 MagLev has no traditional springs. Their job is done by repelling magnets instead. As a result, the mechanism has less friction, and turning is lighter and faster than in the spring version. You also won't hear the metallic spring noise known from older cubes.

Layer alignment is handled by 48 magnets in the corners and edges. Their strength is fixed and cannot be adjusted, which may surprise some people in a flagship WeiLong. Inside the pieces there is a "dragon scale" structure that reduces the contact surface and limits friction. The cube measures 55 mm, so it is slightly smaller than a typical 3x3. It has a matte (frosted) surface with medium grip. Fingerprints show less on it than on the glossy UV versions.

Adjustment is dual adjustment with 9 MagLev compression levels. It changes the distance between the repelling magnets and therefore how "springy" the cube feels. On top of that, there is classic tension adjustment with screws. This means you can set up the WRM V9 MagLev for speed or for control.

Out of the box the cube is very fast, often too fast to control. It can also be louder and slightly sandy. Reviewers agree, however, that it changes noticeably once lubed and with the right compression setting. Turning becomes smooth and fluid, less "blocky" than in older WeiLongs, and corner cutting is snappy. With very loose tension, corner twists can happen, so don't loosen it too much.

The WRM V9 comes in several versions. The Standard has springs and also 48 magnets, costs less and gives a more classic feel. The MagLev is the middle option: faster and lighter to turn than the Standard, but without magnets in the core. The Ball-Core UV versions (8 or 20 magnets in the core) also have a magnetic core that stabilizes the cube more and helps align the layers, plus a glossy UV coating.

The MagLev version makes the most sense for intermediate and advanced cubers who like a light, fast cube and want to set it up themselves. If you prefer a more "guided", stable cube, the Ball-Core variant is a better choice. For a beginner who doesn't plan to lube or adjust the cube, the Standard version may be enough to start with.
