VinCube 3x3 Nova Maglev Ball Core UV

VinCube 3x3 Nova MagLev Ball-Core UV

Vin Cube made its name with 4x4 and 5x5 cubes. Nova is the brand's first 3x3 series, and the VinCube 3x3 Nova MagLev Ball-Core UV is its top version. It is the only cube in the series that combines MagLev, a magnetic Ball-Core and a UV coating. We stock it in the stickerless bright colour scheme.

How it turns

Cubers describe the Nova as a fast, light cube with an airy feeling. It suits people who turn lightly and don't press down on the layers. If you're switching from a more "dense" cube, you may need a day or two to get used to it. Out of the box, the cube is usually very dry and sandy. Many people say that only lube shows how the Nova really turns, so it's worth having some at hand from day one. Despite its high speed, some reviewers praise its control, even with fast lube. On loose settings, corner twists can happen. Tightening the centres usually helps.

MagLev, Ball-Core and magnets

• MagLev: instead of springs, the centres use repelling magnets. This means less friction and a quicker response to your turns.
• Ball-Core: a transparent core with magnets that interact with the pieces. It helps keep the layers in place at high TPS.
• 88 magnets according to distributors, including 20 magnets between the edges and corners. The manufacturer uses its distinctive purple magnets.
• UV Coated: a glossy coating with noticeable grip, more scratch-resistant than regular plastic.

Adjustment

Tension and compression each have 8 levels, giving 128 combinations. The settings aren't marked, so it's hard to tell at a glance which level the cube is on. It's best to change one parameter at a time and check the result.

Nova, Racer or Lite?

The series comes in three versions. Lite is a magnetic cube with a matte finish, without Ball-Core and MagLev. Racer has Ball-Core and a UV coating but uses classic springs. Nova adds MagLev, giving you the lightest and fastest turning in the series. If you care more about control than speed, the springs in the Racer may suit you better.

Who is it for?

For speedcubers who like fast, light cubes and want to try something outside GAN and MoYu. With the Nova, though, you'll need lube and some time spent on setup. As a first cube for a child, a simpler magnetic model is a better choice.
