WitEden Symmetric 3x3x8

WitEden Symmetric 3x3x8 is an elongated cuboid: a puzzle with a 3x3 cross-section stretched across eight layers. It measures approx. 59 x 59 x 154 mm, so it feels completely different in the hand from a regular 3x3. It has a classic non-shapeshifting cuboid design. It keeps its shape while you solve it, and all layers turn around the puzzle's axis of symmetry. We offer the version with a black body (Black).

How the 3x3x8 cuboid works

The two square 3x3 faces turn normally, in 90-degree steps. The long side faces only allow 180-degree turns. This is the only way the puzzle can keep its cuboid shape. In practice, you need a different approach. Some 3x3 algorithms will work, but you have to adapt them to the restricted moves, and with eight layers there are many more edge and centre pieces to solve.

If you have solved smaller cuboids, such as the 3x3x4 or 3x3x5, you will quickly notice that the method is similar, just with more steps. If this is your first cuboid, you can safely start with the 3x3x8, but expect longer solves and some figuring things out on your own.

Turning and feel

You don't buy this puzzle for TPS. The long body has many layers, and the whole puzzle is fairly heavy at around 285 g net. Turning is therefore slower and calls for a calmer turning style. Users report that pieces can catch when the layers are not aligned precisely, but the puzzle holds together well and does not fall apart during solves. Aligning the layers carefully before turning a side face helps.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can already solve a 3x3 and are looking for an unusual puzzle with a more extensive intuitive stage. It is also a great next addition to a collection of WitEden cuboids, as the elongated shape looks striking on a shelf. For complete beginners who are just learning their first cube, a classic 3x3 or a smaller cuboid is a better place to start.
