YJ MGC Beta 3x3 Ball Core UV is the upgraded version of YJ's new 3x3 model. The Beta has a new mechanism and isn't just another refresh of the older MGC cubes. This variant features a magnetic Ball-Core with 8 magnets, a UV coating and classic springs instead of MagLev. It comes in the stickerless bright colour scheme.

How it turns

The Beta has a balanced feel. It isn't one of the fastest cubes, but it isn't sluggish either. The magnets give a clear but not overly heavy "click", and reviewers especially praise its corner cutting and how comfortably it sits in your hands. The Ball-Core helps keep the layers in place during fast turning, so the cube is stable and easy to control. Some users describe the feel as slightly "blocky". If you like very loose, slippery cubes, it may not be for you.

One remark comes up often in reviews: the springs can be audible right out of the box. Usually a few hundred solves to break it in and a little lube on the springs is all it takes.

Which MGC Beta version?

• Magnetic is the base version with magnets between the corners and edges. It has no core magnets and no UV coating, and it's also the lightest.
• Ball Core UV (this version) adds a magnetic core and a glossy UV coating that offers better grip and is more scratch-resistant. Tensioning still works with springs.
• Ball Core UV MagLev uses repelling magnets instead of springs. Turning is usually a bit faster and lighter, but this changes the character of the cube somewhat.

The spring version is a good choice if you prefer a more predictable, controllable feel and want core magnets without paying extra for MagLev.

Who is it for?

For cubers who want a cube with a Ball-Core and UV coating without spending money on top-shelf flagship models. It works well as a main for intermediate cubers who value stability and good cutting. Speedcubers who like calmer, controlled turning will also enjoy it. Beginners will handle it too, as the core magnets forgive plenty of imprecise moves.
