Cubicle FZ-Calm Lube

Cubicle FZ-Calm is a cube lube from the FZ series by TheCubicle. It contains no silicone and is based on a hydroxy compound. Right after application, your cube feels noticeably smoother, more controllable and slightly dampened. It often turns more quietly, too. In our shop, the lube is available in a 10 ml bottle.

What does FZ-Calm feel like?

This lube is for cubers who want to calm their cube down a little rather than squeeze maximum speed out of it. In reviews, cubers most often describe the effect as soft and "buttery", with less noticeable tactile feedback. The lube itself is fairly thin, so it won't make your cube heavy or gummy. It slows the cube down much less than thick silicone lubes do. A very fast cube that tends to overshoot usually becomes more predictable with FZ-Calm. A slower model may even get slightly faster, because the turning becomes smoother.

If you turn very aggressively, you may find the effect too dampened. In that case, start with a small amount of lube and add more gradually.

FZ-Calm or FZ-Rush?

The FZ series includes two core lubes with a similar base. FZ-Rush is aimed at speed, while FZ-Calm focuses on control and a smooth feel. The difference between them isn't big: Calm gives slightly slower, calmer turning. In reviews, Calm is also considered easier to use on its own, while Rush is more often mixed with another lube. Both lubes are compatible with other Cubicle lubes, so you can combine them in your own setup.

How to use

A few drops on the inner surfaces of the pieces are usually enough. Then do a few solves to spread the lube. According to the manufacturer, the effect lasts a long time, and any excess is easy to wipe off because the lube leaves little residue. Too much lube can make your cube overly dampened, so it's best to add it in small amounts.

Who is it for?

FZ-Calm is a great choice for speedcubers who want to add control to their cube, quiet down a noisy mechanism or soften an overly tactile feel. It's also good for experimenting with lube mixing. Beginners with a magnetic cube who want it to turn more smoothly and quietly can use it too, as the lube doesn't require any special application technique.
