The Jupiter version from the series of eight Crazy Pentahedron "planets" by DaYan and MF8. It's a triangular prism with circles on its faces. Some circles turn together with the layer, while others stay in place. Stickerless bright color scheme.
DaYan Crazy Pentahedron Jupiter is one of eight versions in the Crazy Pentahedron series, released by DaYan together with MF8. Each version is named after a different planet of the Solar System. The puzzle is shaped like a five-faced solid, a prism with a triangular base. Its faces have the circular cuts that set all "crazy" puzzles apart. It dates from 2012 and was designed by Daqing Bao. We offer it in the stickerless bright version, made of colored plastic with no stickers.
The mechanism has five axes of rotation. The two triangular faces, top and bottom, turn in 120-degree steps. The three side faces turn in 180-degree steps. The key feature is the circles on the faces. On some faces the circle turns together with the layer, while on others it stays in place and the layer moves around it. The manufacturer marks them with the digits 1 and 0 in its graphics. This is what makes the planets different: all versions share an identical core and differ only in their face pieces. That is why Jupiter has its own set of dependencies and needs a different approach than the other planets in the series.
This is a puzzle for relaxed solving, not a cube for setting times. You need to track not only where the pieces are, but also which parts of the circles move together with the layer. Experience with cuboids, e.g. the 3x3x2, comes in handy, as some solutions look similar, although they can't be transferred one to one. The mechanism isn't tuned for speedcubing. It has no magnets or tension adjustment, so comparing it with modern 3x3 cubes makes no sense.
For cubers who can already solve classic cubes and are looking for something with less obvious logic. It's also a great fit for a collection: all eight planets look almost the same, yet each one solves differently. It's not a good choice as a first puzzle for someone who is just learning the 3x3.
