This DaYan and MF8 puzzle is shaped like a triangular prism and has five axes of rotation. Its faces have circular cuts: some circles turn together with their face, while others are locked. Venus is the second of eight variants in the planetary series, offered here in the stickerless bright version.
This puzzle is shaped like a triangular prism and was created by DaYan in collaboration with MF8. The DaYan Crazy Pentahedron Venus belongs to a series of eight variants named after the planets of the Solar System, and Venus is the second of them. The puzzle was designed by Daqing Bao, and the series was released in 2012. We offer this model in the stickerless bright version.
The Pentahedron has five faces: two triangular bases and three rectangular sides. It also has five axes of rotation. On a standard Pentahedron, the three layers parallel to the bases turn in 120-degree steps, while the rectangular sides can only be turned 180 degrees. The Crazy version adds circular cuts on the faces. Some of the circles turn together with their face, while others are locked and stay in place. Because of this, the same moves rearrange the pieces differently than on the version without circles, so you need to work out your own sequences.
The variants in the series differ in which faces have circles and which of those circles are locked. On the Venus version, there are circles on three faces, and one of them does not turn together with its face.
This is not a speed cube but a puzzle for relaxed solving and for your collection. The mechanism has no magnets and no tension adjustment. Owners of other variants from this series report that lockups can happen at first, especially with the locked circle, and that the turning becomes noticeably smoother once the puzzle is broken in. So it is worth spending some time just turning it before you start solving it seriously.
For someone who can already solve a 3x3 and wants to try something other than yet another cube-shaped puzzle. Experience with cuboids helps a lot, as some patterns work similarly, though not identically. It is also an interesting item for collectors of the DaYan and MF8 planetary series (Crazy 3x3x3 Plus, Crazy Tetrahedron). For a child's first puzzle, a classic 3x3 cube is a better choice.
