GAN 12 Ui Maglev 10th Anniversary

GAN 12 Ui MagLev 10th Anniversary

GAN released this edition to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The GAN 12 Ui MagLev 10th Anniversary is a 3x3 smart cube, a Bluetooth cube that sends every move you make to an app. The mechanism comes from the flagship GAN 12, so this is a proper speedcube, not a toy with electronics inside. What sets it apart from the standard GAN 12 Ui MagLev is the look and the bundle: you get anniversary packaging, a special pouch and a set of anniversary stickers for one face.

How it turns

This cube is very light and built for speed. Users praise its smooth turning and say that in your hands it is hard to tell it is a smart cube. Straight out of the box it can feel sandy, a little loose and slightly crunchy, and some people report clicking pieces. Usually a fresh application of lube is all it needs. Just keep in mind that fresh lube can temporarily worsen the connection with the app. MagLev gives fast, light turning. If you prefer a more solid, controllable cube, you may need a little time to get used to it.

Technologies and adjustment

• MagLev: instead of springs, the mechanism uses repelling magnets.
• Core magnets: help the cube align the layers by itself.
• Replaceable magnets: you change the magnet strength by swapping the magnets in the pieces.
• GTN numerical tension adjustment.
• Honeycomb-structured pieces: lube spreads more evenly across them.
• UV coating: glossy, with a good grip.

Smart features: app, gyroscope and PowerPod

The cube connects via Bluetooth to the free GAN CubeStation app. In the app you can race your friends or compete in global online battles and analyse your solves. The built-in gyroscope also tracks the rotation of the whole cube in your hands. The battery lasts approx. 15 hours. The set includes a PowerPod, a case with a built-in battery. You can store the cube in it and recharge it several times without plugging it into a power source.

Who is it for?

For cubers who want to train on a smart cube without giving up a quality mechanism: track your stats, practise with the app and play online. The 10th Anniversary edition has the same mechanism as the regular GAN 12 Ui MagLev. So you choose it for the anniversary look and extras, not for better turning. If you prefer classic springs, GAN also offers the GAN 12 Ui Free Play.
