GAN 12 UI Maglev PowerPod

GAN 12 ui MagLev PowerPod

GAN 12 ui MagLev is a smart 3x3 cube that connects to the GAN CubeStation app via Bluetooth. Inside, it uses the mechanism of the GAN 12 MagLev, GAN's flagship speedcube. It was the first smart cube with the MagLev system. The set includes the PowerPod, a case that charges the cube and keeps it stored. In our shop, the cube is available in the stickerless bright version with a UV coating.

How it turns

The electronics have only a small effect on how the cube turns. Reviewers compare it to the regular GAN 12 MagLev. Turning is smooth and light, and the cube is quite forgiving. Corner cutting exceeds 45 degrees, and reverse corner cutting reaches roughly one line on most settings. Auto-alignment is there, but it is gentler than in cubes with strongly "snappy" magnets. Straight out of the box, the feel can be sandy and slightly crunchy. If you find the cube too fast, you can use a slower lube. Some users also report clicking sounds from the pieces.

MagLev, core and adjustment

• MagLev: instead of springs, the cube uses repelling magnets. This means less friction and noise in the mechanism than in a classic spring system.
• Magnetic core: 8 magnets in the core work together with the corners and help align the layers.
• Numerical adjustment: tension can be set to 3 levels. The set also includes interchangeable magnet strips, stronger and weaker. According to the manufacturer, this gives 216 setting combinations.

Smart features

The cube sends your moves to the CubeStation app in real time. The app times your solves, analyzes them, lets you train and race online against other cubers. The cube itself is well rated, but opinions about the app are mixed. Some users have also noticed that fresh lube can briefly interfere with the connection.

Who is it for?

This cube is for cubers who want to train with a smart cube without giving up the feel of the flagship MagLev. The FreePlay version has practically the same piece design but lacks the MagLev system. If you only need a regular cube for solving, the GAN 12 MagLev without electronics will be enough.
