GAN 15 Maglev UV 3x3

The successor to the GAN 14, where GAN focused above all on low weight. The GAN 15 Maglev UV weighs approx. 59 g. For comparison, the GAN 14 weighs approx. 70 g and the GAN 12 approx. 66 g. It's a flagship 3x3 cube with the MagLev system, core magnets and a glossy UV coating, in the stickerless bright colour scheme.

How it turns

You can feel the low weight from the very first solve. The cube responds to light finger movements, and your hands get less tired during longer sessions. It's very fast, and according to users it stays fast even with tighter tensioning. Corner cutting is at flagship level, and the magnets clearly help the layers snap into place. GAN states that the layers can self-align from an offset of up to 40°. However, the manufacturer itself notes that in practice this depends on the lube and settings, and gives a range of 15 to 40°.

This character isn't for everyone. Some cubers find that such a light cube is harder to control, and with aggressive turning, catching and lockups can occur. The GAN 15 works best with light, accurate turning. The factory setup often needs fine-tuning. If you prefer the feel of a heavier cube in your hand, you may get on better with the GAN 12, 13 or 14.

MagLev, magnets and tension adjustment

• MagLev. Instead of springs, tension is created by repelling magnets that never touch each other. This means less friction and wear.
• 76 magnets according to the manufacturer, including core magnets. This is not a Ball-Core design.
• 3 levels of magnet strength. You change the setting with interchangeable magnetic pins: green is strong, white is medium and blue is weak. The GAN 14 had 6 settings here, so the range is smaller, and swapping the pins takes a moment.
• Magnetic GES v3: 6 levels of center travel (compression) and 6 levels of tension, giving 36 combinations. The settings lock in place with click stops, so they don't shift while you solve.
• Redesigned spherical internal track, intended to make turning smoother.

UV version

The UV coating is glossy and offers better grip than matte plastic. The GAN 15 is also available as the Maglev Matte version with a matte finish, and as the GAN 15 NewBlack UV with a few design changes.

Who is it for?

For speedcubers who want a very light and fast 3x3 cube and have a fairly light, precise turning style. The wide adjustment range lets you tailor the cube to yourself, but to make use of it, you need to know what you're looking for. For a child's first cube, a simpler and cheaper magnetic model is usually enough.
