GAN V100 Maglev X Gengar 3x3

GAN V100 Maglev X Gengar is a collector's edition 3x3 cube made by GAN in collaboration with Pokémon. Inside, it has the same mechanism as the regular V100 Maglev UV: MagLev, core magnets and numerical tension adjustment. What's different is the look: Gengar artwork on a stickerless bright cube with a UV coating. The cube comes in packaging with a Poké Ball-shaped display stand.

How it turns

The V100 is a 55 mm cube weighing about 64 g, so it's smaller and lighter than most flagship 3x3s. A few points come up again and again in user reviews. Turning is light and fast, and the feel is crisp and fairly tactile. The core magnets help a lot with aligning layers, so imprecise moves are forgiven. The light turning has a downside, too: if you're used to heavier cubes, you may overshoot at first. Corner cutting is decent right out of the box, and once the cube is broken in and center travel is loosened, it improves noticeably. On the tightest settings it's weaker.

Technology and adjustment

• MagLev: repelling magnets that replace springs. Less friction, quieter turning and a bouncier feel.
• Core magnets: magnets between the corners and the core. They keep the cube stable at high TPS.
• 76 magnets in total (manufacturer's data).
• 72 settings: 6 center travel levels and 12 tension levels, changed with the adjustment tool.
• UV Coated: a glossy surface with noticeable grip.

Gengar or regular V100?

Based on the available information, both cubes turn the same. The Gengar version is for Pokémon fans and collectors, or as a gift. If you just want a cube for practice, you'll get the same mechanism in the standard V100 Maglev UV. There's also the V100 Leap, a version with springs instead of MagLev and a more controllable feel.

Important: according to distributors, the Gengar edition has three logos, so it is not legal for WCA competitions. For solving at home, this makes no difference at all.

Who is it for?

For cubers who like light, fast cubes and want a V100 in an unusual edition. Thanks to the forgiving core magnets, it also makes a good gift for a younger Pokémon fan who can already solve a bit. One thing to keep in mind: with this version you're mainly paying for the design and packaging, not for a better mechanism.
