QiYi 72-Block Colorful Magic Snake

QiYi 72-Block Colorful Magic Snake is a snake puzzle made of 72 wedge-shaped segments in the form of triangular prisms. The segments are connected by pivots, and by twisting them against each other you turn the snake into 3D shapes: a ball, animals, geometric solids and all kinds of objects. This is the colorful version (Stickerless Bright), so consecutive segments have different colors. This makes it easier to follow which piece you are rotating.

How it works

Unlike a 3x3 cube, a snake has no single "solved" state to return to. It's all about building shapes, and a figure is finished when it looks like what you wanted to make. Each segment rotates against its neighbor in quarter turns, and the joints click into position, so a finished shape doesn't fall apart. Your first simple figures will come together within a few minutes. More complex shapes require planning the sequence of turns, and the more segments there are, the more combinations there are to try.

Why 72 segments

QiYi snakes come in several lengths: 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 segments. The shortest ones are handy and good for getting started, but their small number of pieces quickly becomes a limitation. The 72-segment version is the longest in the series and lets you build large, elaborate figures that can't be made with a shorter snake. At the same time, it is noticeably heavier and bigger than the shorter versions, so it's less suited to carrying in your pocket.

Who is it for?

This puzzle doesn't require any knowledge of algorithms or any preparation. It's great for a child who likes building and inventing shapes, for an adult looking for something to keep their hands busy (a snake works as a fidget toy too), and for a cuber who wants something other than yet another cube in their collection. If you're new to snakes and prefer a smaller format, you can start with a shorter version. If you know you want to build bigger figures, go straight for 72 segments.
