Swift Block 3x3 Super Maglev

Swift Block is GAN's budget brand. Until now it mainly offered simple beginner cubes, and the Super Maglev is its first model with features usually associated with more expensive cubes. The Swift Block 3x3 Super Maglev is a spring-free magnetic 3x3 cube with a MagLev system based on two magnetic rings, 76 magnets and 8-position GES tension adjustment. It measures 55 mm and weighs only 71 g.

How it turns

The cube is light and fast. Reviewers describe its turning as smooth and fairly quiet, because there is no spring noise. They also praise its good corner cutting and the low number of catches. The manufacturer states that the cube can corner cut up to 90°, and according to retailers the magnets pull a layer back into place when it is turned by roughly 35°. In practice the cube self-aligns strongly. A lot depends on the setting. On the factory setting (5) most people find it stable but not too tight. On positions 1-4 the cube becomes very loose and corner cutting is even better, but it is easier to lose control. On positions 6-8 the cube is tighter and corner cuts slightly worse.

MagLev, magnets and tension adjustment

• Dual-ring MagLev. Instead of springs, repelling magnetic rings do the work, so the layers turn with less friction.
• 76 magnets. That is many more than in older Swift Block cubes, and some of them work between the pieces and the core. However, the cube does not have a classic Ball-Core.
• Hollow pieces. This is why the cube weighs only 71 g.
• 8-position GES. You can change the tension without taking the cube apart.

How it differs from other Swift Block cubes

The Swift Block 355S has springs, 48 magnets and weighs approx. 85 g. The Swift Block 355 Maglev already has MagLev and 64 magnets, but weighs approx. 92 g. The Super Maglev is noticeably lighter, has more magnets and more tension positions. If you prefer a heavier, calmer cube, you may feel more comfortable with the 355S.

Who is it for?

For those who have already moved past their first cube and want a light MagLev cube at a budget price. It also works well for speedcubers as an affordable main or backup cube. It is suitable as a child's first cube too, because it is forgiving and turns well straight out of the box. It is better, however, not to start with the loosest settings.
