DaYan GuHong Pro M 56mm

GuHong is one of DaYan's classic series. In 2023 it returned as the DaYan GuHong Pro M 56mm, an affordable 3x3 magnetic cube. It has magnets in the pieces, core magnets working between the corners and the core, and tool-free tension adjustment. Core magnets are rare in this price range, which is why the Pro M quickly became known as a cheaper alternative to flagship cubes. The 56 mm size is the classic standard for a 3x3. Colour scheme: stickerless bright.

How it turns

The Pro M is fast, light to turn and has a smooth feel. The magnets are medium strength, leaning towards the softer side. A layer snaps into place on its own from about 15 degrees, but the cube doesn't give as distinct a "click" as models with strong magnets. Forward corner cutting is rated very highly. Reverse corner cutting is weaker and works better once you adjust the tension and lube. DaYan has also used a piece shape that reduces layers catching on each other (anti-stick).

Out of the box the cube can feel quite loose, so some people raise the tension by one or two levels straight away for more control. It comes heavily lubed from the factory. Many people wipe off the excess lube or replace it with their own.

Core magnets and adjustment

• Core magnets: extra magnets between the corners and the core. They help keep the layers in place during fast turning.
• 5 tension levels that you change by hand under the centres, without a key. Level 1 is the loosest and gives the most corner cutting, while level 5 is the tightest and most stable.
• No separate compression or magnet strength adjustment. This means the setup range is smaller than on more expensive cubes.

GuHong Pro M and GuHong Pro+ versions

The GuHong Pro M was released in a standard version with springs and in a MagLev version, where the springs are replaced by repelling magnets. According to users, the MagLev is slightly quieter and a little heavier. Besides 56 mm, there are also 54 and 55 mm sizes, designed for smaller hands. The newer GuHong Pro+ is a separate model with 6 tension levels, 8 compression levels and core magnet strength adjustment, so it gives you more options when setting up your cube.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants to move up from their first cube to a faster 3x3 with core magnets without buying a flagship. It also works well as a second cube for practice. The Pro M may not suit someone who prefers heavier cubes with strong magnets and an extensive setup. Such a person will be better served by a model with compression and magnet strength adjustment. For a child, it's a good starter cube, as the tension is easy to set without tools. However, the fast, light turning may take a little getting used to at first.
