GAN 251 M Air 2x2

GAN 251 M Air is the lightest 2x2 cube in the 251 M series, released by GAN in 2021. The series comes in three versions: Air, Pro and Leap. The Air has the simplest mechanism. It has magnets in the corners, but no magnets in the core and no magnetic corner-core system like the Pro and Leap versions. That's why it weighs about 50 g and is noticeably lighter than the other versions.

How it turns

The Air is light and turns without resistance. It has no core magnets to pull the layers into place, so you need to guide it a little with your fingers. In return, you get turning without extra "snapping" and a very good feel for the layers. With a drop of lube, the pieces glide smoothly and the cube becomes fast. You'll like it if you enjoy light, fast 2x2 cubes. If you prefer a cube that finishes moves on its own and stays more stable at high TPS, the Pro or Leap will suit you better.

Air, Pro or Leap?

• Air: fixed corner magnets without adjustment, no core magnets, lowest weight.
• Pro: corner-core magnet system with adjustable strength. According to GAN, it offers better stability.
• Leap: the same system as the Pro, but with noticeably larger core magnets. It aligns faster and has a more pronounced "snap" that takes some getting used to.

The Air is simpler than the Pro and Leap, but that doesn't mean it's worse. It suits people who prefer a classic 2x2 with magnets only in the pieces.

Adjustment

You set the tension with the GES system based on interchangeable nuts. They let you change the spring tension and the center distance. The magnet strength in the Air version cannot be adjusted.

Who is it for?

The Air makes a good first quality 2x2 cube for someone who already solves the 3x3 and wants to try the 2x2. It will also work well for a speedcuber who wants a light and fast 2x2 without complex adjustment options. The cube is allowed in official competitions.
