GAN 251M Leap 2x2

GAN 251M Leap is the top version of the magnetic 2x2 cube from the 251 series, which debuted in 2021. The series comes in three versions: Air, Pro and Leap. The Leap has magnets in the corners and in the core, plus magnet strength adjustment. GAN carried this system over from the GAN 11M Pro 3x3 cube. The 51 mm size is typical of modern 2x2 speedcubes.

How it turns

The first thing you notice in your hands is the very fluid, smooth turning. The cube has good corner cutting, so you don't have to align the layers perfectly before making the next move. GAN uses a technology here that it calls large-angle magnetic alignment. It is an arrangement of magnets inside the cube that helps the layers snap into place faster and more reliably, even when a turn isn't completely precise.

The magnets are clearly noticeable, and many users describe them as strong. The Pro version has the same system of magnets in the corners and in the core. The difference is that the Leap has bigger core magnets. As a result, the cube feels more strongly magnetized, and many people also find it a little faster. The Pro is considered slightly more stable. If you prefer a lighter, less "clicky" feel, set the magnets to the weakest level or consider the Pro version.

Adjustment: GES and magnet strength

• Interchangeable GES nuts with springs of different strength. The set includes 4 sets: the factory-installed blue (1.7 N) plus white (2.5 N), green (2.1 N) and purple (1.2 N). Stronger ones give tighter, more controlled turning, while weaker ones give lighter, looser turning.
• Two nut distance settings, which further change the tensioning.
• Three-level magnet strength adjustment, set with the key included in the box.

This gives a total of 24 setting combinations. When changing the GES nuts, it's worth checking the service manual, because when taking the cube apart it's easy to remove more pieces than necessary.

Who is it for?

For cubers who take 2x2 seriously, compete in competitions or want one cube with extensive adjustment options. The model is allowed in official competitions. For a child's first 2x2 cube, a simpler magnetic model is enough. The Leap only shows its advantages once you start tuning the settings to your solving style.
