The RS3M V5 is the successor to the RS3M 2020, one of the most popular budget magnetic cubes of recent years. The V5 series comes in several versions. MoYu RS3M V5 Maglev Robot 3x3x3 is the middle one. It has a MagLev system instead of springs, classic magnets in the corners and edges, and a frosted surface. A robot-shaped stand is included. Colour scheme: stickerless bright.

How it turns

The RS3M V5 series is light and fast. The feel is rather tactile, with a noticeable magnetic "click" as the layers line up. Users report that out of the box the cube can be stiff, dry and slightly sandy. Usually it's enough to loosen the setting and apply some lube to make the turning smoother and more forgiving. The manufacturer specifies 55° corner cutting and 35° reverse corner cutting. In terms of stability it doesn't match the Ball-Core version, so very aggressive turning needs a bit more control.

MagLev and adjustment

• MagLev uses repelling magnetic rings instead of springs. This makes turning lighter, and there's no spring squeaking, which sometimes occurs in spring-based models.
• 9 elasticity levels, changed with the included tool. This lets you set the cube up more for speed or more for control.
• 48 magnets in the corners and edges (no magnets in the core).

Which RS3M V5 version should you choose?

The Standard version has no adjustment, while Dual Adjustment has springs with tension and compression adjustment. The Maglev Robot replaces the springs with the MagLev system and has purple internal plastic. The top version, Ball-Core UV, adds 8 magnets in the core and a glossy UV coating. This makes it more stable and slightly heavier, but also more expensive. The Maglev version makes sense if you want a light cube with MagLev and don't need a Ball-Core.

Who is it for?

For someone who has already had a first cube and wants to move on to more speedcubing-oriented gear. It's also a good choice for cubers who want to try MagLev at a lower price before buying a more expensive flagship. For a child's first cube, the Standard or Dual Adjustment version is more than enough.
