MoYu RS3M V5 SE Maglev Ball Core UV

This is the best-equipped SE version in the RS3M V5 series. The mechanism is unchanged. What sets it apart from the regular RS3M V5 Ball-Core UV is the look: a black logo, a black Special Edition box and no robot-shaped stand. MoYu RS3M V5 SE Maglev Ball Core UV is a magnetic 3x3 cube with MagLev instead of springs, an 8-magnet Ball-Core and a glossy UV coating. It costs noticeably less than flagship cubes but offers a similar set of features.

How it turns

Cubers who switched from the spring-based RS3M V5 usually describe the MagLev Ball-Core version as both faster and more stable. Turning is light, and the core magnets help each layer settle after every move. The cube is fairly loud, with a distinct "clack", and some describe the sound as slightly hollow. The factory setup doesn't suit everyone. Some people find the cube not stable enough straight out of the box and rate it much higher only after adjusting the tension and adding lube. The manufacturer lists a corner cutting angle of 55° and reverse corner cutting of 35°.

MagLev, Ball-Core and tension adjustment

• MagLev. Repelling magnets replace traditional springs, making turns lighter and faster.
• Ball-Core with 8 magnets. The magnets in the core pull the pieces toward the centre. The cube closes layers more reliably and is less likely to misalign during fast turning.
• 48 magnets in the pieces, for a total of 56 magnets including the core.
• Dual-adjustment system with 9 settings in the core, so you can set the cube up more for speed or more for control.
• UV Coated. The glossy coating gives a better grip than the matte plastic of the cheaper V5 versions.

How is it different from other RS3M V5 versions?

The basic RS3M V5 models have magnets in the pieces, but no Ball-Core or MagLev, and a matte finish. The Maglev Ball Core UV version adds core magnets, MagLev and a UV coating. It is also slightly heavier than the basic version, which weighs approx. 65 g. The SE label refers only to the appearance and box contents. If you want the robot stand, choose the version without the SE label.

Who is it for?

For someone who already has their first magnetic cube and wants to move up to a model with MagLev and Ball-Core without paying flagship prices. It also works well as a second cube for a speedcuber who likes to fine-tune the setup. For a child's first cube, the basic RS3M V5 is usually more than enough.
