MoYu RS3M V5 SE Dual-Adjustment Magnetic 3x3

The RS3M V5 is the successor to the very popular RS3M 2020 and often shows up in lists of recommended budget 3x3 cubes. MoYu RS3M V5 SE Dual-Adjustment Magnetic is the Special Edition version. The mechanism is the same as in the regular RS3M V5 Dual-Adjustment. The difference is in the looks: the cube has a black center logo and comes in black SE packaging. It is magnetic, runs on classic springs and has a dual adjustment system. In our shop it is available in the stickerless bright color scheme.

How it turns

Reviewers describe the RS3M V5 as a fast, light-turning cube that is still forgiving and gives you plenty of control. Corner cutting reaches 55° and reverse corner cutting 35°. Corner cutting is the feature this model is praised for most often. If you try to cut a corner far beyond what the cube can handle, it may lock up, but during normal solving lockups are rare. The plastic has a matte (frosted) finish, and the feel is solid and slightly blocky.

The magnets are of medium strength, and some users find them a bit too weak. The cube is not quiet and can feel dry straight out of the box. A little lube usually helps, and if you notice popping, it's worth tightening the tension.

What Dual-Adjustment gives you

• Tensioning: you adjust the tension with the screws in the core, just like in classic cubes.
• Spring compression: you set it independently of the tension, in 9 levels.
• Design: anti-pop protection, a "dragon scale" structure that reduces the contact area between pieces, and a rounded core that improves stability.

With two independent adjustments, you can set the cube looser for speed or tighter for stability and control. The standard RS3M V5 has no compression adjustment, so you can only turn the screws.

Which RS3M V5 version?

The versions in the V5 series each have their own character. The Standard version has no extra adjustment. Dual-Adjustment, i.e. this model, adds 9-level spring adjustment. MagLev replaces the springs with repelling magnets. The MagLev Ball-Core UV version also has magnets in the core and a glossy UV coating. This makes it heavier, and it "clicks" the layers into place more noticeably. Dual-Adjustment is a good compromise: full adjustability with the classic, predictable feel of springs.

Who is it for?

The RS3M V5 SE Dual-Adjustment works well as a first magnetic cube for learning to solve fast, including for a child who already knows the basics. Speedcubers will find it useful as an affordable practice or backup cube. If you like strong magnets and a very stable feel, the Ball-Core version will suit you better.
